The August proof run sees Hindlee Holsteins, owned by John and Vicki Lillico, make its mark with Hindlee Jeronimo PB Dallas 19004 (375 BPI) coming in straight at the top of the New Genomic Females list and Young Genomic Heifers lists, and at No. 2 on the Top Twenty Genomic Females (irrespective of age) list. Hindlee Holsteins dominated the New Genomic Females list with nine entries.
The other big story is the arrival of Jeronimo - 29HO18698 ABS Jeronimo P - sire to thirteen of the top twenty new genomic females. The highest heterozygous polled sire, Jeronimo at 381 BPI is also the third highest Holstein genomic sire.
A number of years back John and Vicki Lillico had the choice of some high BPI embryos and as a strong believer in the Manna Farm D family they jumped at the embryos that resulted in Hindlee Mom RF Dallas 12003.
Two generations later they are now looking at the No. 2 BPI female in the country, and thanks to a little risk on doubling up on Powerball in the pedigree, there is now the potential that the No. 2 BPI female is also PP (homozygous polled).
Hindlee Jeronimo PB Dallas has six other siblings, four of which are genomic tested ranging from 284 BPI to herself at 375.
“We were really pleased with the flush,” says John Lillico. “We knew there was some risk using Jeronimo given his dam is by Powerball and the same for the mother of this calf. But if we could get to PP and high BPI in two generations it was worth it. There are 3 more heifers still to test hopefully they come back like this one. We should have the polled testing results next month – fingers crossed for PP!”
ABS National Sales Manager, Paul Quinlan, is confident Jeronimo will maintain his high proof as his sire has now added milking daughters with good ABV(i).
In 2013, as ABS was investing in elite Holstein female genetics, Richmond-FD Tango July-ET was purchased, based on her genetic profile and cow family. She descends from the Coyne-Farms Ramos Jelly family in New York, a cow family known for healthy, fertile cows with moderate frame size and high components.
The decision was made to flush July to a polled bull, which resulted in her highest ranked daughter also carrying the polled gene. This heifer, ABS 7726 JazlynP-ET, was flushed extensively to capture and multiply the elite genetics of this family.
Jeronimo, heterozygous polled and carrying the A2 gene, is the bull that combines the best characteristics of this breeding program with his good components (including plus for milk), outstanding daughter fertility and great health traits that the family transmits intensified in this sire, made available to Australian breeders in 2018 from the ABS genomic program.
Top three New Genomic Females were Hindlee Jeronimo PB Dallas 19004 (375 BPI), Cypress Grove V3 Ronimo Tiffany (342 BPI) and Hindlee Jeronimo PB Dallas 19007 (341 BPI).
