Many members utilise Holstein Australia’s parentage verification services. These can currently be provided via micro-satellite technology or genomics, with many members making the switch to genomic testing over recent years. Genomics has the added advantage of being able to provide breeding values in addition to parentage, at a small additional cost.
Holstein Australia is recommending that all members switch to genomics in 2019
With the increased uptake of genomics micro-satellite technology is likely to be phased out in the near future.
Holstein Australia has negotiated a preferential rate for members who switch from micro-satellite technology to genomics prior to the end of March 2019.
Genomics can be used to provide parentage verification only, or parentage verification plus breeding values. It is your choice.
Genomic testing for parentage only is in fact cheaper than micro-satellite technology testing.
Holstein Australia cannot guarantee that it will be able to provide micro-satellite technology services to members over the longer term.
What do I do if I want to make the switch?
Contact Rohan Butler at firstname.lastname@example.org or call him on 0428 135 361 who can take you through what will be involved with your herd. In simple terms:
In order to conduct parentage using genomics any dams involved must be genomically tested and the results made available to Holstein Australia.
Micro-satellite technology has traditionally been used for breeders registering ET animals. In order to make the switch to genomic parentage breeders will need to have the dams of ET animals they want to register re-tested genomically.
Where animals have been previously micro-satellite tested the new test can usually be carried out using the current sample stored by Neogen Australasia.
How do the costs stack up?
The preferential rate negotiated with Neogen Australia for members until the end of March is for genomic parentage is $17 cheaper than the standard micro-satellite technology test. Once the offer period ends and standard pricing resumes, the difference is $4 per test.
Micro-satellite DNA typing cost: $37.00
Genomic parentage testing cost: $33.00
Genomic parentage offer cost: $20.00
With the discount available until the end of March 2019 and uncertainty over the future of micro-satellite technology, there has never been a better time to switch.
