At IDW this year the industry came together to raise over $115,000 for the Dairy Industry Bushfire appeal, with all funds raised to be distributed 50% to the Salway family and 50% to Dairy Industry Bushfire Relief Support.
Set up by Jersey Australia, the Global Impact Sale, Dairy Livestock Services and International Dairy Week, a highlight of the appeal was the pick of the 10,000 strong herd from Australia’s largest dairy operation, the Moxey and Perich families Australian Fresh Milk Holdings (AFMH).
Moxey Farms managing director, Quentin Moxey says that he hopes the donation will provide help to those who need it.
“Originally we were approached by Stuart Lockhart from DLS about the fundraiser auction. I then spoke with Tim Weller from World Wide Sires to see what we could do that would have some real value. The pick of the herd idea came from Tim, and it just seemed like the right thing to do.”
“The winning consortium can literally take their pick from our herd, whatever they fancy, with a great cause benefiting,” says Quentin.
Kicking off the World Wide Sires Evolution Sale, brisk bidding saw the AFMH and Moxey Farms lot sell for $50,000 to a consortium of Flanagan Marketing Services, Woodlawn Holsteins, Coppertree Farms and the Ulupna Pastoral Company (Danny Thomas and John Nicoletti). World Wide Sires added a further $15,000 to the donation.
Flanagan Marketing Services principal, Lawrie Flanagan, says the new owners know they’ll get a great animal as a result, but it is about much more than that.
“It’s really our way of supporting the appeal. I’m sure we’ll choose very carefully from the cows available, but we are looking at this as a donation. With a bit of luck we might make a quid down the track, but that’s not really what it’s all about,” says Lawrie.
Among the cows that the consortium will have the choice of are some of the best Holsteins in Australia, including the number 1 BPI Holstein cow, 10 of the top 100 BPI cows and 13 of the top TPI cows.
A further $50,000 was raised from a silent auction held during IDW, hosted online by Elite Livestock Auctions.
