Australian Holsteins showcased at China Dairy Expo

During the first part of July Holstein Australia’s Genetic Improvement and Research Manager, Rohan Butler, took part in the China Dairy Expo and Mission as part of an Austrade Australian Trade mission.
With a focus on businesses supplying goods and services to the Chinese Dairy industry, the trip was highly successful with visits to farms, breeding centres and research facilities. The mission concluded with attendance at the 10th China Dairy Expo in Tianjin, one of the world’s biggest dairy focused events, which played host to thousands of Chinese dairy farmers and industry people from around the world.
Rohan reported back that the trade mission struck a great balance between information gathering and meeting potential clients for Australian Holsteins, semen and dairy products.
“It was great to connect with many of the people that are buying and milking heifers exported from Australia. In the most part the feedback about these heifers is highly positive and given a market up turn and some other contributary factors the expectation is that they will be looking to purchase more Holstein heifers from our part of the world,” says Rohan.
The dairy farms visited by the Australian trade delegation featured modern production systems efficiently milking good sized herds.
“Many of the cows we saw were second or third generation descendants of imported Australian Holstein heifers,” says Rohan.
“We had the opportunity to present the benefits of Australian Holstein and the important role played by Holstein Australia in ensuring the quality of cattle sent to China. This was also a great opportunity to gain feedback from one of our most important export markets and we will continue to work with exporters to ensure this trade continues to go from strength-to-strength.”
