The Kempsey All Australian Show seems to be defying the odds with a record numbers of entries for its 2007 show held on Tuesday 24 April. Approximately 120 head of dairy cattle were exhibited across five breeds, including Holsteins, Jerseys and Illawarras, with a small showing of Guernseys and Brown Swiss. Holstein Judge, Brad Gavenlock was delighted with the numbers being shown and enjoyed the challenge of having good quality entries across some very strong classes.

Juvenile Champion and Champion Cow were exhibited by Brett and Sue McGinn with Coral Hill Roy Midas and Coral Hill Jolt Mia respectively. These two exhibits are progeny of Rickdale Mason Mia VG87, demonstrating the depth in the Midas cow family.

Intermediate Champion Cow was exhibited by Bradley Notley (owned by PK & PR Notley) with Yelton Viv Wes from a very competitive 2.5 to 3 yrs in-milk class.

Michael Jeffery and family brought a large team to the show after several years’ absence. Their return to the show ring paid off, taking out all three Reserve Champion broad ribbons for Juvenile, Intermediate and Senior Cow. The Reserve Senior Cow, Ausden Skywalker Fiona, took out the best udder class. Fiona was placed Honourable Mention in the 2006 NSW Semex On Farm Challenge finals.

Pleasing to note was the large youth contingent preparing and leading Holsteins at the show. A very strong youth programme has been nurtured through clipping and parading days over the last few years. All the Kempsey youth who attended the 2007 All Breeds Youth Camp in Victoria preceding International Dairy Week were closely involved in this year’s Kempsey Show. Community involvement through the local school’s agricultural departments has provided many enthusiastic participants who have become valuable members of local exhibitors’ teams.
