Australian pedigree for Japan’s top cow

Holstein Australia member and IDW director, Brian Leslie, was surprised to discover a personal connection to Japan's top cow during his recent trip to the country to judge at the Kumamoto Holstein Show.

"I was truly honoured to judge at the Kumamoto Show, which was a simply first class event. The heifer classes were strong throughout, and the in milk classes very strong at the top end.

"The Champion cow, Oakleaf Sarah Sparkle, sired by Japanese bull Sparkling (an Imp. ET from Gillette 2nd Wind) was outstanding, with that wonderful balance of dairyness and power along with a lovely udder, so very well attached.

While on his travels Brian discovered that Japan's top cow, Oakfield Stanley Elegance with an #NTPI (Nippon Total Performance Index) of +3773 was a grand daughter of one of his family's own cows, Pooley Bridge Skychief Elegance 5.

Having won Yearling Heifer at the Royal Melbourne Show in 2004, Pooley Bridge Skychief Elegance 5 was sold and exported to Japan, where she was the winner in milk at several show as well as being the Japan record holder in protein and for fat.
