Gippsland Heats up for Youth Show

A team of young people from Gippsland recently hosted the seventh Gippsland Dairy Youth Show, under the shade of trees on a humid January day. Over 60 head made the trip to the Warragul showgrounds to be judged under Mr. Ben Hennessy from Canada.

The show exemplified the strong future of the dairy industry in Gippsland with exhibitors starting at just five years of age. In what was a big day with an early start for the youngsters, they competently handled their patient heifers throughout the day. Many older exhibitors stood back and allowed younger siblings, cousins and friends to handle their heifers in the ring.

The young calf classes started the day with strong numbers and exceptional quality, the youngest calf being just a month old. Judge Mr. Ben Hennessy quickly and competently sorted through the classes to find his winners. He came through to his Junior Champion Heifer and found Starcrest Gibson Tossie from the well know Tossette family, she was exhibited by Michael Robertson for Hayden and Danielle Dodd of Starcrest Holsteins, Willow Grove. The reserve junior champion was awarded to Creswick First Esme, a Milly First heifer from Creswick Holsteins, exhibited by Katie Male.

With the young heifer classes finished the competition for senior champion heifer revved up and smaller but quality classes were presented. The in milk classes were the highlight of the day and several exhibitors presented milking two year olds. In a twist on recent years the junior two year old in milk was the larger class and Mr. Hennessy found Emma Casltes entry; Kings Vale Bomber Shirley, a ‘clear winner’. Turning to the smaller senior two year old in milk, Starcrest Holsteins was a strong competitor taking out first and second with full ET sisters. Overpowering her sister was Starcrest Integrity Mary the reigning intermediate champion from the 2005 Royal Melbourne Show. Mr. Hennessy had a tough decision in awarding the Senior Champion Heifer and kept the sizable crowd in suspense. It came down to Starcrest Integrity Mary nudging the sweet jersey entry of Emma Castles into reserve. The senior champion and reserve went on to take the Grand Champion and reserve of show.

A wide age group of exhibitors saw three different showmanship classes judged with Gavin Sim of Nilma winning the 10 years and under age group. The 11 to 15 years age group hosted some sibling rivalry with sisters Beth and Emma Scott fighting it out in the ring. In a strong class Beth was victorious over sister Emma and both girls left the ring with a smile. The older age group of 16 to 25 years hosted some of the veterans of the ring with well known local Sarah Jenner taking out the class. Sarah then went on to win Supreme Champion Showman and was presented with a new leather halter compliments of BOS Trading.

All day the younger exhibitors had been eagerly awaiting one class – the fancy dress calf and matching leader. At the conclusion of the showmanship classes patient heifers dressed in tutus, snorkels, witch costumes and bridesmaid dresses to name but a few, started emerging with similarly dressed leaders with big smiles. The spectators seemed to enjoy the class as much as the participants and a hesitant and slightly shocked judge considered how to tackle a class such as this! All of the participants put in a lot of effort and imagination to transform their calves but at the end of the class it was the sister combination of Emily and Meg Anderson appropriately dressed in bathers and their snorkeling heifers that were the victors.

Before the day could conclude three important awards had to be presented. Most importantly was the Rising Star award presented to a shocked Emma Castles. Emma and her family had brought a large team to the show and Emma had worked hard in the ring all day along with her brother Beavan. Emma is the third Gippsland Dairy Youth Rising Star and takes over from last years winner Melissa Anderson. The Mary Batley Memorial Trophy is awarded to a young person with passion and enthusiasm for the industry similar to that of Mary, this year the award went to Emma Scott from Wonthaggi. For the second year in a row 21st Century Genetics have donated a breeding encouragement award, it was presented to Kelly Thomson from Poowong.

To conclude a fantastic and successful show, judge, Mr. Ben Hennessy with help from Semex representative, Stu Mackie presented a comprehensive and concise example of correct showmanship to a large captivated audience.

The Gippsland Dairy Youth team is preparing to hand over the reins to a younger committee for next years show. Thank you to our judge, stewards, helpers and sponsors for making this event possible.
