The Cow of the Year competition has
been running for the past 8 years. Through this competition,
breeders have the ability to get further recognition
of their animals.
Entries for the 2009/10 Cow of the Year competition is open, applications are to be
received at Holstein Australia offices no later than
15th March 2010.
Nominations
are accepted from not only the owners, but may be submitted
by anyone who wishes to nominate someone else’s
cow for the award, including sub-branches.
The
Breed Development & Conformation Committee judge the Cow of the Year
from the information provided, including progeny, classification,
awards, lactation information, with emphasis on if the
animal has made a contribution to Australian genetics.

2009/10 Guidelines
- The Australian Cow of the Year is open to Holstein Australia Herdbook, as well as Appendix registered females.
- A breeder/member nominates the cow and states the reasons why they think it should be considered for Cow of the Year
- Any member may nominate a cow, but the owner must be informed of the nomination and give their permission.
- The Cow of the Year is selected by a panel comprising the Breed Development and Conformation Committee and two extra Judges, chosen at the discretion of the Breed Development and Conformation Committee. The extra Judges cannot represent more than one year in a row.
- The cows that receive the most consideration should have high production, high classification, exceptional progeny, not necessarily a show cow.
- A cow cannot win Australian Cow of the Year more than once.
- Applications for nominations open 1st July 2009 and close 15th March 2010
- Judging will be conducted at a Breed Development and Conformation Committee meeting
- The winner is announced at the discretion of the Committee
- The cow must be alive at closing date for nominations
- The cow can be in milk or dry.
- The cow must be born in Australia.
- Photograph required. A front end photograph with the family is acceptable.
- The winner to receive a plaque. There is also a perpetual trophy at the HFAA Federal office.
- Any animals in which members of the BDCC or their families have an interest may not be entered in the competition.
